Welcome — what this guide does

This step-by-step guide helps you unbox, initialize, and secure your Trezor hardware wallet. You’ll learn how to set up a PIN, back up your recovery phrase, and connect safely to apps. The instructions below are intentionally practical — follow them carefully to protect your crypto.

Quick start steps

1 — Unbox and inspect

Confirm the packaging is sealed. Inspect the device for damage and verify tamper-evident stickers, if present. Do not use a device that looks altered.

2 — Connect to a trusted computer

Use the included cable to connect your Trezor to a device you trust. Prefer a freshly-booted machine with up-to-date software and no suspicious extensions.

3 — Initialize securely

Follow the on-screen instructions in the official Trezor web app or recommended desktop application. Choose “Create a new wallet” to generate a fresh seed.

4 — Record the recovery phrase

Write the recovery words on the supplied card or another offline medium. Never take a photo, copy to cloud storage, or type the phrase into a computer.

5 — Set a PIN and verify

Choose a memorable but strong PIN. Confirm it on the device screen, not only on the computer. Test unlocking and locking once to ensure everything works.

Security best practices

Your recovery phrase is the single most sensitive item — store it offline, in multiple secure locations if needed. Consider using a fireproof safe or split-storage technique (Shamir or multiple sealed copies). Never share the phrase with anyone, and beware of unsolicited support requests or phishing websites asking for your words.

Keep your firmware current. Trezor periodically releases firmware updates that improve compatibility and security. Only update firmware using the official app and verified release notes.

Using your Trezor day-to-day

Once set up, use the device to approve transactions: always review the full destination address and amount on the device screen. Use companion wallets that support Trezor, and prefer native integrations over browser plugins when possible.

For receiving funds, share only your public address. For sending, confirm details on the device and use transaction labeling in your wallet to track spending. If you plan to use multiple cryptocurrencies, create separate accounts for clarity and security.

Troubleshooting

If the device doesn’t respond, try a different cable and port. Reboot the host computer. If you suspect tampering or persistent failure, contact official support and do not proceed with sensitive actions.

If you lose the device but have your recovery phrase, you can restore your wallet to a new Trezor or compatible wallet. If both device and recovery phrase are lost, funds are permanently inaccessible.
